Museums, and especially historic houses, have limited physical space but endless demands for increased programming. What happens when the demands of the event threatens the safety of the collection? Hear from three historic houses about how they balance successful events with collections care. From a holiday market that attracts thousands of visitors to themed tours to an actual battle reenactment that takes place inside the house, learn the tips and tricks that these sites have developed for increasing public engagement and access while also protecting the collection.

Carolyn Wallace is the Director of Education at Cliveden, a National Trust Historic Site in Germantown, PA. Carolyn's duties include educational programming as well as collections care. She will bring her experience managing the challenges presented by the annual Battle of Germantown reenactment that happens inside Cliveden and on its grounds.

Carrie Villar is the John & Neville Bryan Senior Manager of Museum Collections at the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She oversees the collection at the Trust's 21 properties and works with site staff to ensure the collection is well stewarded.
Howard Zar is the Executive Director of Lyndhurst in Tarrytown, NY. Under Howard's leadership, Lyndhurst is thriving and new buildings, programs and events are maximizing the public's experience at the site. Howard uses theatrical techniques, along with practical common sense to safely incorporate the collection into the site's annual over the top Halloween and Christmas special tours, amongst other special events.
Head Curator & Collection Manager
Julie Bly Devere is the Head Curator & Collection Manager at Filoli in Woodside, California. Julie manages the collection of this 50,000+ square foot historic house and garden, which includes emptying the entire first floor every year for the annual Holiday Traditions market. She will share the ingenious solutions she's developed managing this, and other similar events, at this session.
