A UTOPIAN DREAM? Stewardship of Collections and the Freer Circulation of Cultural Artifacts"

Michael Conforti will reflect on ideal of collective stewardship of cultural property and the potential of international cultural exchange programs in an age of growing nationalism and global skepticism, one accompanied increasingly by institutional retrenchment. Can ICOM play a role in keeping the ideal alive?

A president of the Association of Art Museum Directors from 2008-10 and long-time trustee, Fellow and Resident of the American Academy in Rome, Michael is currently on the Executive Committee of The Amon Carter Museum of American Art and serves on the Board of the Canadian Centre for Architecture, the Menil Collection, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art and the (Philip) Guston Foundation. He is also a member of the International Advisory Council for the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Zentral Kustodie of the University of Goettingen, and the Aspen Institute's Artist Foundation Initiative. Director of the Clark Art Institute from 1994-15, he continues to teach in Williams/Clark Graduate Program in the History of Art. He was a trustee of ICOM-US from 2005-11.
